Child Find 

The purpose of Child Find is to identify, locate, and evaluate children and youth between the ages of 3 to 22 who are suspected of having or have a disability or developmental delay, in order to provide appropriate special educational services under the law.

Every school district is required to have procedures in place to help locate students who may need special education services. Please contact the Savanna School District Special Education Department at 714-236-3815 if you are concerned about your child's development or have questions about referring a child for special education services.

In the Savanna School District, Saturday Academy and Summer Academy are two of the extended learning programs offered to our students. Extended learning programs provide students with additional academic support beyond the traditional school day. These programs support and enhance the curriculum while providing differentiation. 

Saturday Academy Program       

Attendance at Saturday Academy provides the opportunity for a student to make up absences and to receive additional academic support. Knowing that good attendance at the elementary school level is the responsibility of parents, Saturday Academy is NOT punitive. Instead, students will be exposed to engaging lessons as well as have the opportunity to participate in hands-on academic activities. Exact lessons will vary from week to week with a strong emphasis in the areas of reading, writing, science and technology.

Students do not need to bring anything to Saturday Academy. All academic materials will be provided for students by the Savanna School District. Please leave backpacks and other materials at home. 

Saturday Academy sessions are from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., on specific dates throughout the year; dates for the 2023-24 school year can be found below. Parents of students invited to Saturday Academy for excessive absences or tardies will be notified by letter. Students receiving such a letter are expected to attend Saturday Academy for the entire morning. Any other parent wishing to have his/her child attend Saturday Academy for academic support should contact the school principal for the date and location of the next Saturday Academy session. All sessions meet from 8:00 a.m. to noon and students must be in attendance the entire 240 minutes to receive credit.

Summer Academy Program 

 

   

Students were immersed in a wide variety of STEM lessons during our Summer Academy program. 

Our Summer Academy program is designed for students who will be enrolled in kindergarten through grade 5 in the Savanna School District for the following school year. With a strong focus in language arts, math, science, and technology, students attending Summer Academy are provided with a technology-rich instructional program to assist them in meeting or exceeding grade level standards. With the integration of student computers and iPads in every classroom, students are engaged in Science, Technology Engineering, and Mathematics lessons to enhance their academic performance. What an exciting experience our students have with rich learning adventures each and every day!

Thanks to the Nursing Department at Cypress College for providing flu shots for students at each of our sites.  Staff also received flu shots to keep them healthy!

Healthy Students Learn Better

Healthy students learn better, perform better academically, and experience proper growth and development. Because the health and well-being of our students, parents, and staff is one of our highest priorities, we want to keep you informed of critical health-related information. The Health Office provides only basic first aid for injuries and illness that occur during school hours.  It is not a clinic or a substitute for your own doctor.  If you have no doctor, or cannot afford medical care for your children, please contact the district nurse for assistance.

Medications

Medications, both prescription and over the counter, may be given at school when an authorized health care provider feels medication is absolutely necessary during school hours.  An authorized health care provider is a person who is licensed by the State of California to prescribe medication. A written “Request for Medication” completed, signed and stamped by an authorized health care provider and signed by a parent/guardian must be brought to school before any medication may be administered. The parent/guardian is urged, with the help of the authorized health care provider, to work out a schedule of giving medication at home whenever possible.

Medication must be brought to school by parent/guardian or responsible adult along with the “Request for Medication” form.  The form lists the conditions that must be met if medication is to be administered at school.

Please keep the school informed if your child is taking medication daily or routinely outside of school hours or begins taking medication. Some medications may have affect on your student’s school performance.

Communicable Diseases

Parents must report all cases of communicable diseases (chicken pox, measles, etc.) to the school nurse. Do not send your child to school with a fever, vomiting, frequent cough or rash of any kind. When your child is absent, please call the school to notify them of the absence.

Immunization requirements:

The Savanna District and the State of California regulations require that complete health and immunization records for incoming kindergartners and students new to the district must be presented in written form and authorized or signed by a public health clinic, health care provider or private doctor before a student can begin attending classes.  

The health records should be brought when parents/guardians come to pre-register children for the new school year.  There is no grace period: all immunizations must be up to date before a child can attend school.  For additional details, parent/guardians may contact the School Nurse.

Physical Exam Requirement

California law requires all first grade students receive a physical exam within 90 days of starting first grade; however, it may be completed up to 6 months prior to entering kindergarten. This is known as the CHDP Health Assessment. Parents are encouraged to have the CHDP Health Assessment completed and the paperwork submitted to the school office as soon as possible. Dental Exam Requirement

California law (Education Code Section 49452.8) requires that all students receive an oral health assessment, conducted by a licensed dental professional, before May 31st of the student’s first year in school. The exam can be completed up to 12 months prior to the student starting school.  For most students the first year of school is Transitional-Kindergarten or Kindergarten.  If you require a dental exam waiver, please contact our district nurse.

Vision and Hearing

All students in Transitional-Kindergarten/Kindergarten, 2nd and 5th grade receive a vision assessment. Boys in first grade are screened for color vision. There are State mandated screenings done by credentialed school nurses. The district school nurse facilitates any additional screenings, which include:

All make-ups for mandated screenings.

Vision and hearing parent or teacher concerns.

All initial IEP’s and Triennial IEP’s for students preschool to 6th grade.

All annual IEP’s for students with vision and hearing issues, preschool to 6th grade. 

Please Keep Your Child Home from School if He/She has: 

  • had a fever over 100.4 degrees within the previous 24 hours

  • had vomiting or diarrhea within the previous 24 hours

  • an unexplained rash

  • red, itchy, or crusty eyes

  • green or yellow drainage from the eyes, ears, or nose

  • a severe cough, sore throat, stomach ache, headache, or ear ache 

  • a contagious illness, until cleared to return with a note from your doctor

  • head lice, until treated

Please Notify the School if: 

  • Your child is absent
  • Your child has a contagious illness or head lice, in order to prevent disease spread

Other Important Health Office Information: 

  • Please make sure that the school has up-to-date phone numbers (at home & work) so you can be reached in case your child becomes ill or injured at school
  • Please provide the school with the names and phone numbers of additional persons who may pick up your child in the event you can’t be reached
  • Provide a health care provider’s note for any student who has activity restrictions due to sprains, fractures, stitches, recent surgery, or any other problem. The student will not be allowed to go out for recess or PE until cleared to do so by a health care provider.

    • Provide a health care provider’s note for any child who has been excluded from school for a possible communicable or contagious condition. The child must be brought to the office by the parent to be checked before being allowed to return to the classroom.

Mental Health Services

Savanna School District has partnered with Care Solace to provide confidential support for students and families struggling with mental health issues.  Services are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week in a variety of languages.  Click here to begin the process to receive help for you or your child.
