Welcome to Twila Reid School!

Hello Twila Reid families! My name is Ms. Maria Garcia and I’m excited to continue to serve as Principal at Twila Reid Elementary School for the 2023-24 school year! Twila Reid School, home of the Rams, is a beautiful campus adjacent to Twila Reid Park in West Anaheim. At Reid School, we believe in giving every child a chance every single day to reach their full academic, social and emotional potential. Our dedicated, caring staff are committed to establishing an inclusive and supportive environment where each student can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. It is our goal to provide a comprehensive education that goes beyond academic excellence, placing emphasis on character development, critical thinking, and nurturing creativity.

To sustain and build upon the momentum we began this last school year, our Title I teachers will be available to engage students in organized games and play during both morning and lunch recess. In addition, they will assist teachers with academics using the push-in model during core instruction time and provide social-emotional lessons in the afternoon with a variety of students.

When you step on the Reid School campus, it’s obvious that Reid Rams ROCK!  You don’t need to look hard to see that students at Reid are Respectful, Own Their Actions, Cooperative, and Kind to one another in all they do. These foundational character traits serve as the cornerstone for empowering our students to effectively navigate obstacles and emerge as accountable global citizens.

Educational excellence is our goal for each and every student; our exceptional staff works diligently to ensure success for all of our students. We’re looking forward to our monthly Flag Ceremonies where we will acknowledge students’ excellent attendance and behavior.  We will have our very own PBIS store where students will trade in their R.O.C.K. slips for prizes every Friday.

We believe that parents are important partners in supporting students on their academic journey as they learn to be reflective and engaged learners.  We will continue to engage with parents are we work together to support students throughout the upcoming year.  Our amazing PTA hosts a number of fun, engaging events for students and parents; I encourage you to participate in as many as you can.

I’m happy to be able to serve Reid and our community and help support the learning and growth of all our students!  Indeed, Reid Rams ROCK!

Reid School's Instructional Program

Our instructional strategies and practices are also aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Twila Reid staff members provide our students with a high caliber learning experience in a caring and nurturing environment so that students feel valued and respected. We desire that all of our students develop and maintain a love for learning!  Mastering academic vocabulary, becoming a fluent reader with analytical thinking skills, and learning to communicate through writing are critical to a student’s continued success in their educational journey!  These skills will be stressed in all classrooms and at all grade levels as we continue to equip our students to build for their future success.

Mrs. Maria Garcia, Twila Reid School Principal

Mrs. Garcia began her educational career as an instructional assistant in a predominantly Spanish speaking community where she fell in love with education. While working and going to school, Mrs. Garcia double majored and graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Communication Disorders from Cal State Los Angeles.  In deciding which route to take for her Master’s Degree, she worked for the the Department of Mental Health, serving at-risk students; two years later she earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education. While pursuing her Credential and Master’s Program in Special Education, Mrs. Garcia began became a Special Education Early Childhood Teacher serving students with disabilities.

Mrs. Garcia was born in Guatemala, coming to the United Stated at the age of two with her younger sister and parents. Preschool in the United Stated was where her love for learning began. Mrs. Garcia’s parents worked hard. Her dad began working for a well-known Hispanic newspaper company delivering newspaper at dawn and would then go to his second job as a parking attendant. Her mom cleaned homes and Mrs. Garcia would go help her with the housekeeping and English language on weekends. With hard work and dedication, her dad eventually moved up in the newspaper company and her mom became a property manager. Mrs. Garcia understands the meaning of hard work, perseverance and cultural competence. She is able to connect with families and students and is a genuine example of education for a better tomorrow. When Mrs. Garcia is not at Reid, she is anywhere her young son wants to be!
