Welcome to Savanna School District!

We have much to celebrate as we look forward to the coming school year as we prepare Today’s Learners to be Tomorrow’s Leaders!  We’re excited as we look forward to the 2018-19 school year with continuing to focus on the implementation of our new English Language Arts/English Language Development program, taking a ‘deeper dive’ into data to drive the instructional program and our continuing commitment to STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics! A combination of a rich, well-rounded curriculum, highly qualified and caring staff and a long-standing commitment to excellence is continuing to prepare our students to be successful 21st Century citizens.  Our dedication to integrating STEM across the curriculum ensures we provide students with real-life applications to meet the demands of an ever-changing global society as we create the workforce of tomorrow.

Over the summer, we’ve been able to complete technology-related projects at school sites including updating classroom computers and ensuring all laptops checked out to teachers are in good repair.  With funding set aside for technology from our bonds, we completed the replacement of teacher laptops this summer. With Title I funding, we’ve been able to purchase additional equipment that will provide Hansen and Reid teachers participating in the iPad project with 15 iPads in each classroom.  We will continue the implementation of iReady throughout the District during the upcoming school year, providing focused intervention of skills in both language arts and math; the iReady data will provide teachers with essential information in order to develop focused intervention lessons for students. As we continue moving forward with technology, we are indeed preparing Today’s Learners to become Tomorrow’s Leaders as we ensure students have digital literacy skills that will propel them into college and career readiness. Because student and staff safety are paramount, we are continually assessing the safety and security needs of our campuses and are proud of the systems we have in place. We have consistently undertaken measures to ensure the safety of our schools in the past and will continue to do so. Furthering our commitment to student and staff safety, additional cameras were added in a variety of areas throughout the District. We’ve also implemented the electronic sign in system for visitors to our campuses.  In addition, we’ve partnered with NaviGate Prepared to not only help us provide local law enforcement access to ctitical site information but to also provide staff with immediate, real-time access to all the information and tools they need to help ensure the safety of students and staff in an emergency situation. We are extremely grateful that we’ve been able to complete much-needed enhancements that will provide students and staff with safe, secure facilities to meet the demands of 21st Century learning. These projects and more will impact our children's education and our community for generations to come.

Because of the support of Cal Poly University, Pomona, we were able to provide a Summer Academy with a focus on STEM, with technology infused across the curriculum. Through Summer Academy, we were able to provide academic support and enrichment programs not otherwise possible for the nearly 300 students in attendance; the staff and student teachers did an outstanding job of ensuring that we’re helping Today’s Learners to become Tomorrow’s Leaders. Summer Academy staff hosted a delegation of 44 educators from the Jiangsu Province of China who were on site to learn about American schools and see our program in action. It was so interesting to hear both groups of teachers comparing the differences (such as classroom sizes and pedagogy) in Chinese and American education systems. They left with new ideas and an excitement for how teachers in America teach.  We also provided before and after school opportunities for Summer Academy students including day care and Achieves.  In addition to safe, nurturing environments, these programs helped provide ongoing learning experiences for our students throughout the summer.

The partnerships our schools have cultivated with our local community will help us to continue to ensure we prepare tomorrow’s leaders.  Our schools’ commitment to exemplary programs that create safe and inclusive environments for all students can be evidenced at each site, some similar and others to meet the unique needs of the students, parents, and staff.  Each school has embraced  Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) implementation, ensuring positive behaviors throughout the campus. Partnership programs have involved parents in school activities, from serving as greeters in the parking lot to assisting children at lunch, from volunteering in classrooms to reading with children throughout the school day, from welcoming dads as Watch D.O.G.S. to a school-level VIP Club, our students are demonstrating good citizenship along with social and emotional growth that will help them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Through partnerships with the City of Stanton, we’ve been able to offer parenting skills classes, provide high school-aged ‘big brothers and big sisters’, enhance counseling and anger management classes for students and families in need, expand after-school tutoring and homework help, and recognize students for perfect attendance.  With the support of the Anaheim Police Department, students from across our schools will once again have the opportunity to be involved in the Jr. Cadet program. Through Jr. Cadets, students will participate in educational and physical activities that help to teach and reinforce respect, responsibility, and self-discipline. Partnerships such as these are essential in ensuring our students have the support of the entire community to assure their success!

Truly, our successes are YOUR successes; it takes a village to raise a child and our children are so very fortunate to be part of this great community and the many partnerships that support them. These partnerships demonstrate our commitment to ensuring today’s learners will become tomorrow’s leaders.

When I reflect on what makes a good school district a GREAT school district, I recognize that it is “people;” people like our staff who are committed to what they do each day to ensure student success that we can be proud of; people like our parents who provide the home support for our students so that they can reach their potential; and people like all those in our community who continue to contribute to our successes in so many ways. Because of all of the support from a wide variety of people in our community, the 2018-19 year will be the year that will help to propel today’s learners toward becoming amazing future leaders!
